Gold Proof Pounds
The first gold proof pound was only issued as recently as 2002, but only as part of the 13 coin Golden Jubilee collection issued that year.In 2003, a pattern set of gold proof pounds was issued, previewing the new "bridges" series to be issued from 2004 to 2007 inclusive.
In 2004, a gold proof one pound coin was issued featuring the Forth Rail Bridge.
This was the first gold proof coin in a series of four original designs featuring bridges within each of the four home nations, and for the first time ever a gold Proof one pound coin has been offered as an individual piece.
The gold proof coins have a substantial weight of 19.619gms, which is almost three times the weight of a sovereign.
