2007 Quarter Ounce Britannia Proofs
Each year the Royal Mint issue a number of quarter ounce gold proof Britannias. The quarter ounce gold Britannias have a face value of £25, and weight slightly more than a sovereign, yet they sell for less than the price of a proof sovereign, making them an attractive alternative as a gift. They are also an attractive coin, and have a lower mintage than proof sovereigns, making them interesting for collectors.This year's have now been issued, but we have resisted buying any so far.

More Gold for Less Money
There is over 6% more gold in a quarter Britannia, yet you would have to pay over 13% more for a proof sovereign, taking both coins at original issue price, making the quarter proof Britannia a 19% better buy judged on its gold content. Britannias are in many people's opinion, an even more attractive coin than a sovereign.2006 Boycott
Most years, we purchase a number of these new, ordering before they are released. This year we feel the Royal Mint's price increase is far too high, making the coins even more expensive than usual (we usually offer them at a reasonable discount). Also the Mint has reduced its dealers discounts, and increased the quantity requirements, making it even more marginal for us to stock and distribute these. We also believe the Mint's pricing to be based on gold at about £380 per ounce compared with its recent £310 level.Although the word boycott is rather strong, we have decided not to stock and offer them from new this year, and will wait until they become available in the secondary market.
Naturally this means that we currently wish to buy these sets.
