During 2000, we kept checking for availability of the Brilliant Uncirculated bullion versions of gold Britannias from the British Royal Mint. None had been issued, and as the year passed, it started to look unlikely that any would be issued. In December 2000, we asked several times each week, and received no good news. Indeed, by mid December, we were being asked several times each day about year 2000 gold Britannias in all four sizes. We phoned the "Customer Service Desk" at the Royal Mint, and were quite emphatically told that none had been produced or issued. The very next day, one of our customers brought in a Royal Mint leaflet he had received that day offering a quarter ounce gold Britannia. We were less than impressed by the Royal Mint's knowledge level, but not totally astounded, and we redoubled our efforts to source gold Britannias in any or all of the four sizes. The Mint refused to supply us with any of the quarter ounce size, even though they were offering them to their "Coin Club" members. We asked about one ounce versions, and were told we would have to order more than 1,500 pieces, and pay double the usual premium rate. In fact we had to take all their "old stock" of previous years, 1500 pieces plus whatever we wanted dated 2000. At this stage we gave up, and resigned ourselves to the fact that we were unlikely to get any at all.
