The Australian Government state:Australia's rare and endangered birds will be featured on the new Gold Series coins to be released by the Royal Australian Mint on 12 July 2004. The Cassowary will be the first endangered bird profiled in the three-year series and appears on both the $150 and $200 denominations. This Australian icon of the north Queensland rainforest with its distinctive characteristics is now endangered and fewer than 1500 are left. The Mint's annual coin release in gold provides collectors with an opportunity to add dimension, theme and design to their collections. The inclusion of an endangered Australian bird theme will help raise the profile of the plight of the Cassowary and assist in educating Australians to help preserve our endangered wildlife. The coins' design is from the Mint's designer, Wojciech Pietranik. The distinctive Cassowary is portrayed in profile. The design includes a reminder of the bird's natural habitat with the inclusion of the tropical foliage of the Lawyer Vine.
