2001 Australian Prospector One Ounce Gold Nugget Proof
In 2001 Australia introduced a 'Prospector' series of proof gold nugget coins, marking the 150th anniversary of Australia'a first major gold find in 1851. The series will run for 5 years. The 2001 coin shown on this page is therefore the first in the series.We occasionally get individual one ounce proof Prospector nuggets , and also complete sets of 5 coins, through the addition of a 1/20 ounce coin.
Coin Description
The one ounce coins in the series all feature colour printed highlights in the design. The 2001 one ounce coin shows a scene of a prospector panning for gold in a river. This is the first design in the Australian Prospector five year companion series of Proof Nugget coins, which celebrate the significance of gold in Australia's history.The Australian Prospector series of Proof Nugget coins commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first payable gold find in Australia at Ophir, in central western New South Wales, in 1851. This discovery led to a gold rush that had a major impact on the fledgling Australian colonies. That impact is still being felt today, with Australia being the third largest gold producing nation in the world.
The series features a special design on the 1 ounce proof coins to celebrate the significance of gold in Australia's history. The first design in this five-year series shows a lone "digger" panning for gold, with his tent in the background. For the first time in the Australian Nugget coin series, colour has been used in the design to highlight the red night sky and the digger's tent.
