2004 Expansion of the EU €50 Coin In 2004, the French mint, the Monnaie de Paris, issued two One Ounce gold proof Fifty Euro gold coins to celebrate the expansion of the European Union. France announced the new face of Europe from 1st May 2004, with the Accession Treaty enlarging the European Union to 10 new countries, bringing the then membership from 15 to 25 countries. Those to join in 2004 were Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus. These two lovely designs were issued to celebrate the event.

Obverse
On one side, which we will call the obverse, is the partial face of Marianne with six flags, and twelve € symbols in circles. Marianne is present everywhere in France and holds a place of honour in law courts and town halls. She symbolises the "Triumph of the Republic", a bronze sculpture overlooking the Place de la Nation in Paris. Her profile stands out on the official seal of the country. Also bears the inscriptions:-
