Australian Commemorative & Proof Issues
In 1992, Australia issued a set of four proof gold coins with a one ounce gold medallion, featuring the five main female members of the British Royal family. Each of the 4 coins contains half an ounce of pure gold, and bears the portrait of one of the 4 princesses, while the medallion has an enthroned 'sovereign' portrait of the Queen, and contains one ounce of gold.
The set was issued partially to raise funds for the Commonwealth Games. It is accompanied by a booklet with a concise biography of each of the five royal ladies, with a colour photograph and their coat of arms. The booklet also has a foreword by Prince Edward, information about the Commonwealth Games Federation, and Stuart Devlin who designed and sculpted each of the coins and the medallion.
Although the Queen Mother and Princess Diana have often appeared on coins, the same is not true of Princess Anne and Princess Margaret, certainly not showing a full sized profile portrait, as on the coins in this set. For the collector of royal portraits, therefore, this set has rarity value to commend it.
