Perhaps we should be flattered by the number of people including dealers who continually infringe our IP (Intellectual Property) rights by using our copyright images, but we do not find it amusing, and will take legal action against any copyright thieves.
Ruby Peck Foundation (rpfoundation.org) Ruby Peck Foundation For Children's Education (rpfoundation.org) are just one of the many websites worldwide who commit copyright theft by using our copyright images without our permission.
What's Wrong?
Ruby Peck Foundation (rpfoundation.org) have used our high quality 1861 Italian Gold 20 Lire
reverse photograph on their website.
We are about to contact them to request that they add a credit and link.
From a quick look at their website, they look like a genuine charitable organisation, with a motto "Aspire to Inspire". If they are genuine, we salute their aims, but if just because they are a charity or similar, this does not give them any moral right to abuse copyright. It would hardly cost them anything, just a few seconds, to add a credit and link on their website.
What About Respect and Courtesy?
We read R.P.F.'s Mission Statement on its index page. All well and good, but we would add our suggestion, that they should also encourage children to have courtesy and respect. It would help if RPF gave a good example of this by always giving a credit and link on its website.
The first image we say on their front page has a Digimarc watermark, as do our photos.
The image information states the copyright owner as Corbis adding "Do Not Copy". We could see no credit for its use. Whether Corbis have supplied this image under licence, we cannot tell.
It does not do any harm to contact copyright owners to ask permission. Our copyright page states that we are happy to grant a free licence to charities, but also suggest they contact us to let us know.
Ruby Peck Foundation failed to do any of this, and we would expect them to behave ethically in all matters, including respect for copyright works. Mostly it is a simple matter of common courtesy. RPF should lead by setting a good example.
Didn't They Do Well? We were delighted to see Ruby Peck Foundation got a very generous bid of $3,000 for their coin. Its approximate value is currently around $300, so the buyer paid about 10 times its real world value.
