Oxfam (oxfam.org.uk)
Oxfam (oxfam.org.uk) are just one of the many coin dealers or websites worldwide who commit copyright theft by using our copyright images.
What's Wrong?
Oxfam (oxfam.org.uk) have used our high quality 1887 gold double sovereign (two pounds) photograph
on their website, and are clearly in direct competition with us.
We submitted a polite request via their "Post a comment here" feature, which states "Please note that this is a moderated comments system. Your comment will be checked by a moderator prior to publication. We do not guarantee that comments will be published.". This was acknowledged by their server.
We do not know how frequently, if ever, Oxfam UK check their moderator's inbox, but the best part of a week has now elapsed without any response.
We are about to contact them to formally request that the image be removed as they have clearly missed two opportunities to add a credit and link.
While we have great respect for the work Oxfam carries out, we do expect them to behave ethically in all matters, including respect for copyright works. If we neglect to chase "innocent" copyright abusers, this could adversely affect our rights over other users.
Thanks But No Thanks!
When we did contact Oxfam about their lack of response, we did receive an apology, but they then removed our image and failed to give us any credit for its use. This despite the fact that we indicated that our preference would be for them to continue using the picture, but comply with our reasonable request.
How to make friends and influence people!
Repeat Performance
Shortly after the page appeared on Oxfam's website, we noticed numerous online newspaper articles appearing, so we guess Oxfam have a good press release and publicity department. Of course, most of the news site used the same copied photographs, presumably trusting that Oxfam would have followed normal standards of legality and courtesy, and either used their own photos or at least photos where they had obtained the owner's permission for use.
If Oxfam had placed a credit and link, then it is likely that other news sites would have done so also.
