Everything you need to know about Manx Gold Crowns.
One Ounce of Gold
Many countries now issue a one ounce bullion coin, to be sold at a very low premium over the intrinsic gold value. There are twoManxversions is the Gold Crown, which we describe on this page, the other is theGold Angel. The Isle of Man introduced crowns as a coin denomination in 1979. They have been made in a wide variety of sizes, weights and metals including cupro-nickel, silver, gold, platinum, palladium and titanium. The crown seems to be a "catch-all" denomination, but on this page we will concentrate on gold crowns which have been issued as bullion coins, with gold content of one ounce or fractions of an ounce.
Gold Cats
In 1988 or possibly 1987, the Isle of Man issued its first 'Cat' crown. This must have been very popular, as they have continued to produce gold cats almost every year since. Each year sees a new and different design featuring a different breed of cat.
Manx Cats
We tend to call the Isle of Man 'Cat' series of crowns 'Manx Cats', but this is quite incorrect in a feline sense, perhaps we would be more accurate if we called them 'Isle of Man Cats'. Cat lovers will know that Manx cats are famous for having no tails, we usually tell people that Manx cats have only three legs. If you don't know why, just look at the Manx coat of arms.
The Manx Gold Crown Family
Gold bullion crowns have been produced in a number of different sizes and weights, from one ounce to one twenty-fifth of an ounce, as detailed below.

Low Premium Over Gold Content
As with most one ounce gold bullion coins, they are made available to world bullion dealers at a low percentage premium over the current gold fix, although the premium on Manx gold crowns in higher than that charged on Krugerrands of most other gold bullion coins.
Higher Premium on Smaller Sizes
The fractional sizes are issued at higher premiums than for the one ounce versions. The fractional coins have never been as popular as the full one ounce coins, usually only being purchased as singles.
