Austro - Hungarian Restrike Tradition Austria and Hungary have a tradition of continuing to issue coins of their rulers as commemorative pieces long after they have died, with the date frozen. Often the date used is one which was not issued during the ruler's reign, so it is easy to know that any bearing that date are official restrikes, although outright forgeries remain possible. Despite this, many small dealers and private individuals often attempt to sell these without mentioning the facts, particularly on internet auctions websites (eBay), a practice which we believe to be deceptive and dishonest.
