Baronsons
The registered address for Baronsons was 35 Curzon Street, London, W1Y 7AE.
Our recollections of this company are somewhat vague, and we would be grateful for anybody with more detailed knowledge to contact us, and help fill in the blanks.
We guess we first became aware of Baronsons in 1974. They seemingly appeared from thin air, but started supplying Krugerrands at very competitive prices, often undercutting ours, which was unusual as we have always been very competitive. It was our guess that they must have been importing Krugerrands illegally, smuggling them into the UK, and avoiding import restrictions, and VAT.
They disappeared as quickly as they appeared, apparently into thin air, and we only learnt some time later that Martin Davies had been fined £40,000 in December 1975, at the Old Bailey for his part in a plot to smuggle Krugerrands into Britain.
In the spring of 1975, Davies apparently chartered an 85ft yacht belonging to Sir Charles Mander. The yacht called Mariola was subsequently seized by the Greek Navy, and was involved in a Greek currency smuggling charge.
A High Court legal case was commenced in 1977 by Sir Charles over alleged losses following the yacht charter.
Martin David Davies was born on 18th March 1940, and was also known by various aliases including Martin Dane, Davie William Martin Davies, and David Martin.
Davies is believed to have moved to Los Angeles around 1976, and then later to Utah.

2008 It seems that a Martin David Davies has been convicted recently in the USA, but denies being the same Martin David Davies, or at least claims to have no criminal record.
