Samuel Johnson, also known as Dr. Johnson, started work on one of his most important books A Dictionary of the English Language in 1746 but it was not completed until 1755. Although it was widely praised and extremely influential, it was not a lucrative enterprise for Johnson as he himself had to bear the expenses of its long composition.This gold proof fifty pence is issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its publication.
