Commonwealth Games 2002 Two Pounds Coin

In 2002 the British Royal Mint issued four different £2 coins, to commemorate the Commonwealth Games being held in Manchester. These are available as a complete gold proof collection. The four different designs represent the four home nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each of which was represented by a team in the games.

2002 Commonwealth Games Gold Proof Two Pounds

Since 1986. the Royal Mint has issued two pound coins, both for circulation and as commemorative versions for collectors.
In 2002, as the latest in this series of £2 coins, the Royal Mint produced a set of designs for the Commonwealth Games.

Different Versions

In addition to the gold proof version offered here, the Commonwealth Games £2 is being produced the following different versions, further details of which are shown on our other web site.
  • Ordinary circulation version, which should be available from banks and post offices during the year.
  • Specimen version, issued in Royal Mint folder. This has a superior finish compared with the ordinary coins, so will be preferred by most collectors. the folders are also very attractive and informative, and made interesting and unusual gifts.
  • Silver Proof version, with the outer part gold plated.
  • Piedfort proof version, similar but made double weight, with a lower mintage.

Gold Proof Version

The gold proof version has been produced in 22 carat red gold, with the centre "gold sprayed" according to the Royal Mint, before striking. The issue limit was fixed at a maximum of 500 sets, which we consider to be quite a low mintage. According to the Royal Mint:-
To mark this celebration of sporting excellence, the Royal Mint has issued a commemorative two-pound coin.
This magnificent Commonwealth Games Four-Coin Gold Proof Set exemplifies the desire, the success and the attainment of the ultimate sporting award - gold. Demonstrating the highest achievement in the art of minting, the Four-Coin Gold Proof Set has a worldwide issue limit of just 500, and is sure to be a rare and sought-after collection. The luxurious red leather case, gold blocked with the now famous Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games logo, provides a fitting presentation and protects the precious contents from dust and harm, while the accompanying information booklet incorporates a Royal Mint Certificate of Authenticity

Obverse

The Fourth Portrait
The fourth of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank Broadley, FRBS, FSNAD, whose initials IRB appear under the head, as used on all British coins from 1998.

Reverse

The reverse is the work of artist and sculptor 'Matthew Bonaccorsi, a skilled member of the Royal Mint engraving team, whose design was the winning entry in a competition.
Representing celebration, victory and sportsmanship it shows a moving figure holding aloft a banner, the top of which is divided into lines representing the lanes of a running track or swimming pool. there are four versions of this coin, one for each of the participating teams from the United Kingdom. They are featured, in turn, by their flag appearing in cameo.

Rarity Value

This issue of gold proof £2's appears not to have sold well when it was first released. There are numerous possible reasons for this, one being that the coins were only available, as far as we know, in complete sets of four. This must have precluded a significant number of collectors who would have purchased one of the coins, but either did not want, or could not afford, the whole collection, especially as all four designs were quite similar. We have noticed that in cases such as this, demand slowly grows to exceed supply over a period of time. The issue limit was low at only 500 sets, and it appears that only 315 sets were sold, making this a very low mintage for a modern gold coin issue.
