2002 "Gold Sovereign" Collection
In 2002, Westminster Collections promoted a "gold sovereign" collection of 6 different "gold" "sovereigns" from Gibraltar & Sierra Leone.
The set we bought from a "collector" had only 5 different designs in it, as one coin was duplicated!

2002 Golden Jubilee Six Gold Coin Collection To cash in on, sorry, commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002, Westminster Collection issued or promoted a "Collection" of 6 "Gold" coins. Four of these were "sovereigns" issued by Gibraltar, while the other two were thirty dollar coins from Sierra Leone.

15 Carat Copper As already mentioned, these "coins" are made of 9 carat gold, meaning that they are composed of 9/24 gold (37.5%), and therefore the base metal content, almost certainly copper, is 15/24 (62.5%). If these were meat and potato pies, they would have to be labelled as potato pies with meat in order to comply with accurate labelling regulations.

Five Designs & Two Duplicates We often wonder about the mental health state of people who buy coins from Westminster, but on this occasion, the person who sold us this particular set appears not to have noticed that the two Sierra Leone coins have the same design. It supports our theory that people who buy coins from Westminster (we can't bring ourselves to call them collectors) don't appear to exercise their brains before exercising their credit cards and buy coins. This one appears not to have exercised his eyes once he received them.

Issue Limits The edition limit stated on the single certificate which accompanies the "collection" is stated as 5,000. We would be very surprised if the actual mintage, corresponding roughly to the quantity sold, approached this figure. If it does, then this would reflect a remarkable marketing achievement.

Issue Prices We do not know the original issue price of these coins, and would be interested to hear from anybody sober and sane enough to recall it.

Update - January 2011
On the 29th January we received the following email:

Hi,
The reason for contacting you is in response to your web page, which asks for information about the original issue price of the above 'collection'. My father paid £101.50 (includes £2.50 p&p) for each one of these coins from Westminster in 2002 - a grand total of £609!! As you have all six for sale for £295, I think he was well and truly 'fleeced'! He now no longer collects coins!
Yours,
G.C.
Proof Finish
Allegedly, these coins have all been struck to a proof finish.

2003 sovereigns are now available.

2002 Quarter Britannia Proofs
If you missed the 2002 proof sovereign at the original issue price, you may wish to consider a 2002 quarter ounce gold proof Britannia . These contain more gold, have a lower mintage, many people believe they are more attractive, and we still have a few available at a much lower price. We believe these make a great christening or other gift.
