Gimmick or What? We don't know about you, but we tend to be slighly sceptical about gimmicky coins. Our feeling is that they are often ideas dreamt up by marketing men to part suckers from their money. As we try to give our customers reasonable value for money, these gimmicky marketing ideas are anathema to us, especially at the ridiculously high prices asked and paid for them when new. What's worse is that the gimmick often tends to diminish any secondary market price rather than enhance it.
Prices
The gold content of this coin is worth about £50 in 2005, but was less than £40 in 2000. We think a high original retail price on a similar coin would have been £100, and let's add a whopping £25 for the diamond, which would cost about £1 bought in quantity. Just try and guess how much the original purchaser paid for this coin. We will give you a few clues. First, we would not have believe the price if we had not seen a copy of an instalment invoice, second the item was bought from Westminster Collections of Watford. We sometimes criticise the Royal Mint for some of its prices, gimmicky offers, and slightly misleading descriptions, but they are paragons of virtue and value when compared with Westminster.
