1999 Alderney Solar Eclipse 125th Anniversary Gold £2 Proof Coin
The 1999 Alderney gold £2 proof coin is a large crown sized coin, and features, on its reverse, a pair of gannets in the foreground, apparently looking at a solar eclipse above St. Anne's church, probably hoping that something fishy is going on. The gannets are featured as Alderney is the southernmost part of the British Isles where gannets can be found, and as a reminder that wildlife can be affected by the eclipse. It is larger than a similar British gold proof crown, and contains almost as much gold as 6 sovereigns. This seems appropriate as gannets are bigger than the average British seabird.
The solar eclipse could be observed on Alderney on Wednesday 11th August 1999, the total eclipse beginning at 11.16 BST (10.16 UT), and lasting for one minute and forty-five seconds. The next will occur in 2081.
