1995 National Trust Centenary Gold Medal, by the Royal Mint
A large (63mm) gold medallion produced by the Royal Mint for the Centenary of the National Trust 1895 - 1995, in 9 carat gold.

The Gold Medallion
The specimen we have seen, and shown here, is only in nine carat gold (37.5% pure). Traditionally most commemorative medals were struck in 22 carat or 18 carat gold. Probably due to the higher price of gold bullion, but perhaps added to by marketing and profitability factors, sadly some modern medallions are produced in inferior metals such as this. Still, it does help to keep the secondary market price affordable also!
We do not currently know whether these medallions were produced in other sizes, metals, or alloys, but believe it is likely.

Obverse
The obverse, or main side, of the medallion features eleven images chosen to reflect the wide range of concerns that the National Trust encompasses.
The legend (inscription) reads:
THE NATIONAL TRUST
1895 - 1995

Reverse
The reverse shows the coat of arms of the Royal Mint in Llantrisant.
The legend (inscription) reads:
ROYAL MINT
CENTENARY MEDAL
It would appear that the Royal Mint designed this to be used as a common reverse design for a wide range of commercially produced medals, thus enabling companies or individuals to reduce their tooling costs.

Edge & Hallmark
Surprisingly, the edge, although intended to be plain, is rather uneven.
It bears a London Assay Office mark, and the sponsor's mark RLH, which we presume is that of Roger de L. Holmes, the then Deputy Master and Chief Executive of the Royal Mint.
