1990 British Gold Coin Proof Sets
1990 Gold Sovereign Proof Set
The 1990 gold proof set features the third portrait of the Queen, as used from 1985 to 1997 inclusive on most British coins, but it is only the second four coin gold proof set (the other being 1985) to share this obverse design together with the classic Saint George and Dragon reverse design. The issue quantity was less than one third of the 1985 issue. The issue limit placed on the 1990 set was 2,500 and only 1,721 were issued. There were 5,849 of the 1985 sets issued. Type Collecting
The only other four coin gold proof sets of the same type, with the Saint George and Dragon design and the third portrait, were issued in 1985, 1991, 1992, and 1993. The Four Coins
The four gold coins we refer to are, of course, the gold sovereign and half sovereign, along with the two pound coin, often called a double sovereign, and a five pound gold coin. New Presentation
In 1990, the four coin gold proof set packaging was redesigned, and changed to a red leather box, and for the first time, a gold-plated medallion was including, with a crowned "Elizabeth R" above the date, and on the reverse of the medallion, a horse represents the Chinese year of the horse, in their 12 year cycle.
