1989 USA Commemorative Gold $5 Congress Commemorative Coins
America issued gold five dollar commemorative coins in 1989 for the 1789 Bicentennial of the Congress.

Gold Eagles
The USA is a relatively young country, and its first regular issue of gold coins started in 1795. Although most of them have an eagle as a major part of their design, for some reason the $10 piece acquired the name eagle , and the other sizes as double eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles. The five dollar gold pieces are therefore known as half eagles.
There are also commemorative $5 eagles, first issued in 1986.
Be careful not to confuse them with the modern $25 half ounce gold bullion eagles . Both are called eagles. See also our circulation type gold eagles .

1789 - 1989 Bicentennial of the Congress
The USA issued gold commemorative five dollars in both proof and regular (non-proof) versions.
Both versions have the same design as shown.
