Windsor Jewels Auction
We can think of little historical reason for this medallion or "fantasy pattern crown" to be issued in 1987, apart from the fact that this was the year when the Windsor Jewels were sole at auction. There was much interest in "Windsorabilia", anything remotely connected to the Duke of Duchess of Windsor was being marketed, and bought.
It was 51 years since Edward VIII acceeded and abdicated, and 1972 when he died, so none of these dates give rise to any notable annniversary.
Collector Demand We are aware that many collectors would like to add a coin of Edward VIII to their collection. Any British portrait coins of Edward would be prohibitively expensive if they ever came to market. There are the 1936 Edward VIII coins from British West Africa, British East Africa, Fiji, and New Guinea, but none of these carry a portrait.
Nine Carat Gold Alloy We also think thatm if you are going to produce a gold medallion or pattern coin, then make it in a coinage metal such as 22 carat gold (91.66% pure), not 9 carat (only 37.5%), however we cannot change what already exists.
Description
The obverse has a portrait, facing left, of Edward, with the legend:
EDWARD KING AND EMPEROR
20.1.36 - 22.12.36
The reverse shows a beaver on a small island, with the word CANADA above, and the date in the exergue:
1987
The edge is plain, except for a London hallmark, with a sponsor's mark PD, and the date letter "a".
