Way back in 1902, five pound gold coins were issued for circulation, but even then, they were probably mainly hoarded as curiosities and keepsakes as the modern cupro-nickel £5 crowns are nowadays. You may wish to see our page ofother gold £5 coins. In 1980 the Royal Mint started issuing gold £5 coins once again, although the 1980 coin was available only as part of a 4 coin gold proof set. Of the 5,400 pieces issued of the 1981 proof £5, a number were issued as part of a9 coin gold and silver proof set.
1981 Proof Five Pounds
In 1981, the £5 coin was made available separately for the first time since 1902, although only 5,400 were issued.
Important Type Coin
The second or decimal portrait was issued from 1968 to 1984, but the only two dates of five pound gold coin issued with the second portrait were 1981 and 1984, apart from those issued as part of complete proof sets in 1980 and 1982. Because of this the 1991 £5 gold coin is an important coin for "type" collectors.
