The Monetary Authority of Fiji commissioned the Royal Mint to strike a special issue of gold coins to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Independence.The ceremony on 10 October 1970 wa attended by His Royal Highness Prince Charles who represented Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Design
The obverse of the coin features the country's coat of arms together with an inscription "Fiji" and "1980". The inscription on the scroll beneath the shield translates as "Fear God and Honour the King".
The Obverse was modelled by Robert Elderton, a Royal Mint Engraver.
The reverse of the coin features a portrait of H.R.H Prince Charles designed and modelled by Michale Rizzello.
The proof coin can be distinguished fiom the uncirculated version by the attractive frosted finish to the high relief design.
