The Gold Medallions A whole rash of commemorative medallions were issued after the death of the great man in 1965, and a further few on the centenary of his birth in 1974. These medallions vary greatly in size and quality. Some are very impressive, being struck in a large size, and with high relief giving great detail.
Description Each medallion is similar except for its size.
Obverse
A large and inpressive facing portrait of Churchill wearing a spotted bow tie and a three-piece suit. The legend (inscription) reads:
WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL
CENTENARY
1874 - 1974
Reverse The design on the reverse shows a number of artefacts and implements which were associated with Churchill, all superimposed on that looks like a representation of the Cross of St. George:
Edge
The edge is plain, apart from the hallmark showing it to be 22 carat gold, with the sponsor's mark G & Co Ld, from the London Assay Office.
