trafalgar-bay on eBay Stupid, Crook or Optimist?
trafalgar-bay, of London, United Kingdom, offered numerous items on eBay with misleading description, including extremely rare pattern sovereigns, a non-existent 1879 double sovereign.

EXT RARE VICTORIA YOUNG HEAD TWO POUND PIECE 1879
"TOTALLY UNRECORDED IN ANY CATALOGUE- UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY"
What's Wrong?
Mark Twain said "It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt".
We believe that people, including eBay members, and small time coin dealers, should learn what they have got by doing some research instead of trying to sound like experts by claiming what they have is rare, valuable, unique, stunning, and all the other hype and bullshit they come out with.
The vendor is fraudulently or ignorantly misleading and deceiving all potential buyers. Gaining pecuniary advantage by deception is the definition of fraud.
Other Items The same crook also offered a number of gold plated silver "Royal Sovereign" medallions as "EXT RARE ELIZABETH 11 ROYAL PATTERN SOVEREIGN" or similar.
Price
We think the seller was asking a starting price of £0.99 for his 1879 double sovereign.
One of his "pattern sovereigns" sold for £5.50.
eBay Guilty of Negligence or Complicity
This ex-eBay vendor, although he probably still sells on eBay under a different name, was fairly typical of a number of other eBay sellers who regularly and typically use misleading descriptions, and appear to get away with it. eBay don't seem to care much, as long as they are getting their listing and selling fees.
eBay probably made a few thousand pounds in fees from this vendor before it closed his account.
More eBay Fraudsters! A partial index of some fraudulent or misleading eBay listings we happen to have noticed. A complete list would need an entire website of its own, and probably a large dedicated editorial staff.
Victoria Double Sovereign Fake Fantasy Coin
A year or two after we saw trafalgar-bay offering his 1879 gold two pound "coin", we came across another one in a parcel of coins offered to us for sale.
On seeing the obverse side, the writer was able to "guess" the date correctly. We have now added a page about this interesting fake.
