Top London Prices Paid for Scrap Gold According to one many leaflets which come through our letterbox, this jeweller, with a mobile number but no address or landline telephone number will pay top prices. Problem is that even the claimed prices are so low, it's a rip-off.
Advertising Flyers, Knocker Boys & Hotel Buy-In Dealers With increasing gold bullion prices, we have noticed that many small dealers are jumping onto the scrap-gold buying bandwagon. While we respect the entrepreneurial spirit of some of these people, their buying prices often prove to be a complete rip-off.
Example One leaflet we got through our door recently (July 2008) claims:
Top London Cash Prices Paid
Wanted
Gold & SilverGoldM**** & Son Jewellers
We pay
in any condition.
9ct up to £100 tr. oz. 15ct up to £150 tr. oz. 18ct up to £200 tr. oz. 22ct up to £250 tr. oz.
07506 ****** (Mobile telephone number
The ********** ********** Club ( We have seen several flyers now at different clubs, hotels, and towns).
Or call Stuart for an appointment (for a home visit)
What's so Bad?
There's nothing much wrong with this, if you don't mind getting ripped off. First compare the 9ct price with ours. At the time of creating this page, our "small quantity" buying price for 9ct scrap gold was over £150 per ounce, compared with "up to" (whatever that means) from the semi-anonymous leaflet buyer. One of our competitors, many years ago, used to take big local newspaper adverts claiming to pay "up to £100 per ounce for scrap 9ct gold (when it was worth about £88 - £90, and against our genuine advertised price of £80 per ounce). When people took stuff to sell them, this rogue outfit offered £1 per gram (about £31 per ounce).
Even at these leaflet prices, the buying in prices are very low, and certainly it's misleading to call them "Top London Cash Prices".
Anonymous? We note that, although the leaflet states the name of a jeweller, there is no address, no landline telephone number, nor surname for "Stuart". It could be a local burglar, mugger, robber or rapist, for all you can tell from the leaflet. Would anybody in their right mind invite this person into their home to show them their family heirlooms and valuables?
Neighborhood Watch We also spoke to a Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, who told us that his local police contact had asked him to keep a note, and pass on any such leaflets, and to tell his neighbours not only to exercise caution, but get a price from a local jeweller first.
Our Conclusions and Advice The buyer behind this particular leaflet probably makes at least 50% to 100% instant profit on anything he buys. Sellers are getting ripped off quite badly. Over more than 40 years in this business, there have been a constant stream of similar cash buyers and leafleteers, most of whom pay low prices. We would recommend that any potential seller shops round a little. If you are not satisfied by the price you can get locally, you could always post it or bring it to us, and will almost certainly get a better price than from your local jewellers and dealers.
