Pre - Columbian Series - Stone of the Suns - Jaguar In 1992, the Mexican Mint commenced a series of commemorative gold and silver coins, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Christopher Columbus, featuring designs from pre-Columbian Mexico. The 1992 coins take their designs from a stone, the Stone of Suns, or Piedra de las Soles. This apparently has four faces, each representing one of the first four suns. It seems that in Aztec mythology, there were 4 previous suns before the current one. The Jaguar also represents the earth's fertility, and possibly the fourth sun.

Jaguar Piedra de los Soles
La escultura original presenta cuatro caras en las que se representan las cuatro edades o soles anteriores al quinto sol. La primera de dichas edades está representada por un jaguar y el número "4". Dicho número simboliza el sol de tierra o sol de noche, mientras que el jaguar representa la fertilidad de la tierra. En esta pieza se representa la cabeza del jaguar con las fauces abiertas y sus características manchas. Unicamente se aprecian tres numerales ya que una esquina de la pieza se encuentra mutilada.
El valor facial de estas monedas es de $1,000, $500 y $250, con diámetros de 34.5, 29.0 y 23.0 mm. para las presentaciones de una, 1/2 y 1/4 Oz., respectivamente. Ley 0.999, acabados en satín y espejo.
