Misleading AdvertsGold & Silver Roadshow Cash for Gold Regal Hotel CleveleysWhen we saw this advert for the first time, we thought here's yet another opportunistic scrap gold buying rip-off merchant. As usual, we took a look at it to see who the advertiser was. Very often it is difficult ti find out, as many such advertisers seem to hide their actual identity away as though they were ashamed of it. As usual, the only telephone number is a mobile, which never inspires us with much confidence, but rather fills us with suspicion. In tiny print. white on red, at the very bottom of the advert, and very hard to read without a magnifying glass is "Company Registration Number 448 3639". We decided to look this up at Companies House, and discovered: Name & Registered Office: D & F MCGRATH (HOUSE BUILDERS) LIMITED 9 CHAPEL STREET POULTON LE FYLDE LANCASHIRE FY6 7BQ Company No. 04483639 Status: Active Date of Incorporation: 11/07/2002 Country of Origin: United Kingdom Company Type: Private Limited Company Nature of Business (SIC): 43390 - Other building completion and finishing. So, it is a building company, which may partially help to explain why it does not promote its name prominently, but certainly does not explain why you should sell gold and silver to them. Prices? We also looked to see what sort of prices they offer. There was very little information, which we found surprising. If you are paying a good price, why not shout about it? The only price we could find was for "All pre-1947 silver coins", which they claimed to pay "At least 10 times face value". At the time we wrote this page (18th January 2013), we were paying 20 times face value for 1920 to 1946 silver coins, and 37 times face value for pre-1920 silver coins, so their only published prices were half or less than half of ours. We can only guess how poor their prices must be for all the other stuff they offer to buy. Free ValuationsThis is misleading. They are not likely to give you a valuation for your goods, only an offer to buy. We often see dealers advertising free valuations, and they are hardly ever genuine valuations. Sometimes auctions houses will give a free estimate of sale price, but even these are not the same as a proper, professional valuation. Potential sellers think are are getting something for nothing, and get suckered into getting something for nothing. Often they then get suckered or pressured into accepting the offer, because of course, the "event" is only present for a few days. No ID Requirement! We also noticed the advertiser was not only stressing the fact that they pay CASH, but also there was not stipulation that potential sellers take identity documents with them. Honest, reputable, above-board dealers all expect and demand ID nowadays. Any failure to get ID could and should be treated as suspicious. Buyers of second-hand goods are supposed to register with local authorities, and to keep proper records, ask for proof of ownership, and ID. We do not know whether this advertiser complies with any of this. Our Conclusions and Advice Know what you have got, work out how much you should get, shop around, and do not be rushed into selling.
