Gold Coins of East India Company

Brief Historical Notes on East India Company

The East India Company was founded in the 17th century to open channels of trade between Britain and the East Indies (mainly India). It was later granted Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I allowing trade monopoly. EIC mainly traded in silk, spices, tea and timber.

EIC eventually governed three regions (presidency towns), Madras, Bombay and Bengal. The Madras Presidency main industries were cotton ginning and weaving. Bombay presidency (now known as Mumbai) mainly dealt with the milling of cotton. The EIC eventually moved its headquarters to here in 1687.

Coinage
Each of the presidency towns issued their own coinage until 1835. The coinage in Bombay and Bengal presidencies were the Rupee. Madras presendancy dealt in Pagodas and Fanams to name a few. From 1835 to 1858 the EIC issued a unified coinage until the control of the EIC regions moved directly to the Britsih Crown.

2010 One Mohur Gold Proof Coin This limited edition coin was produced by The Royal Mint and EIC in 2010 after the EIC relaunch earlier that year.

Obverse The obverse of the coin shows the EIC merchants mark, one of the first commerical logos to be produced.

Reverse The reverse of the coin shows a Lion and a Palm Tree (tree of life) as seen on the orginal Mohur coins. Writing is shown both in English and Urdu as the orginal. This was most probably to facilitate trading with the two countries at the time.
