Gold Sovereign Series Each year since 1980, the Royal Mint have produced sets of 3 and 4 coins in the gold sovereign series, in 2009 the four coin set became a five coin set with the introduction of the quarter sovereign. The 3 coin set usually consists of a sovereign, half sovereign and double sovereign or two pound piece, this is now called a 'premium' three coin set. The 'standard' three coin set now contains a sovereign, a half sovereign and the quarter sovereign.
St. George and Dragon - Recut Reverse Dies
The traditional St George & Dragon design has been used on sovereigns, with a few breaks, since 1817.
During this long period, there have been a considerable number of minor changes to the dies used for the reverse (tail side). Last year, the reverse design appears to have been completely re-engraved, although there was no advance announcement of this from the Royal Mint. Please see our Gold Sovereigns
website for a full explanation.
Design News In previous years the 3 coin and 4 coin sovereign collections have usually contained all coins of the same design, however in a number of years, the two pound coin included with the sets has been the commemorative version instead.

Not In Stock
We have always thought the three coin set to be too expensive to make them a worthwhile purchase. Many people obviously agree as it is one of the few products that many UK dealers do not stock. This may also be something to do with the Royal Mint price breaks! In order to qualify for a reasonable discount you have to buy quite substantial quantities. We tend to purchase 50 of the 4 / 5 coin sets and have no trouble selling them but even if we buy 10 of the three coin sets we still have them in stock years later. For this reason we will not be purchasing either the standard or premium three coin sets direct from the Mint this year.
If, however, you would like to purchase quantities of these sets, i.e. 10 or more please contact us as we may still be able to source them at considerable discount compared to the Royal Mint.
Wanted We play an active part in the secondary market for many gold and silver products, including three coin sovereign sets so we would be more than happy to purchase a 2011 (or any other date) three coin set from you.
