In 2000 Zambia issued an oval 10,000 kwachas gold proof coin for the Queen Mother's Centenary, with a printed photographic reproduction.
Zambian Gold Coins Zambia only issued its own coins for the first time in 1964 for its independence, Its gold coins are commemorative pieces. with the first issues in 1979.
Queen Mother's Centenary Coin
This an unusual coin in a number of respects. First, it is oval, which is certainly an uncommon shape for any coin. Second, it has a monochrome photographic image printed on its reverse, which makes it one of the earliest dated printed coins we can remember.
According to the certificate which accompanies this coin, there were three different designs issued in gold, each with an issue limit of 100 pieces. There were also silver proof, and cupro-nickel versions issued.
Unlisted in Krause This coin is not listed in Krause's World Gold Coins or World Coins. This did surprise us, although perhaps it should not, because we are coming across increasing numbers of coins which are not included in the Krause range of coin catalogues.
