1965 Gold Sir Winston Churchill Stamp Medallions
In 1965, a five shilling crown coin was issued to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill, the first time the head of a commoner had appeared on a British coin, with the exception of Oliver Cromwell.
There was also an issue of two commemorative stamps. These had denominational values of four (4) pence, and 1/3 (one shilling and threepence).
A number of gold medallic replicas were issued by Metalimport. These would have required copyright permission from the Post Office to reproduce the designs. The medallions were struck by Johnson Matthey of London.

Description
The design of the medallions reflects that of the stamps, being split into two panels, divided by a vertical line about one quarter of the length from the right hand side. On the smaller, right hand panel is the crowned head of the Queen, while in the larger, left hand panel is a large close-up of Churchill's face. Such was considered top be Churchill fame and renown that it was not considered necessary to add any caption to his portrait. The only inscription being the stamp's value, respectively 4d (four pence) and 1/3 (one shilling and threepence).
The reverse of each medallion is inscribed with the following description:
REPLICA IN 18 CARAT GOLD
OF THE
SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL
COMMEMORATIVE STAMP
NOVEMBER 1965 FIRST EDITION
Followed by a full British hallmark from the London Assay Office, showing it to be 18ct gold, and a serial number, preceeded by the letters A (4d) or B (1/3).

Presentation
The medallic replicas were normally issued in pairs, complete with a purplish blue fabric covered box, with red velvet and satin lining.
A slightly larger boxed set includes both medallions and a First Day Cover set of stamps.

Mintage & Issue Limit We do not know the issue limit or actual mintage quantity for the Churchill stamp replicas, it is not stated on any of the certificates.

Gold Stamps Gold stamp replicas are a form of medal or medallion. Although not VAT exempt, they can be an interesting way to invest in gold at the same time as acquiring historical, artistic, or antique artefacts.

Collecting Gold Stamps A number of medallists have marketed replica stamps in gold, and other metals, in order to market them at stamp collectors (philatelists). Some will undoubtedly have been bought originally by stamp collectors, but others will have been purchased by non-philatelists.
