1948 Winter Olympics Gold Medal
Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the top three placed athletes in the final of each Olympic event. The medallion we feature here appears to have been issued, presumably by the 1948 Swiss Olympic committee. We do not know for what specific purpose these medallions were issued. They could have been for presentation to VIP's, or as a fund raising piece of merchandise. Whatever the reason, it remains an attractive medal, and an interesting addition to any collection including Olympic, sporting, or Swiss themed items.
Unfortunately we do not have a box or certificate.
Obverse
A naked male athlete kneeling to the right on his right knee, holding the flaming Olympic torch in his left hand, with the legend:CITIVS ALTIVS FORTIVS (or CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS) as the U and V can be interchanged in Latin.
In the exergue is the engravers name EMIL WIEDERKEHR
Reverse
The reverse features the five Olympic rings across the middle, with a sprig of laurel behind it, and a B (Bern) mintmark below. The legend reads:
V ES JEUX OLYMPIQUES D'HIVER ST. MORITZ 1948
